Why cohesion and diversity are not in tension

Cohesion and diversity are sometimes framed as being in tension with each other, yet considerable evidence suggests that diverse communities can achieve just as strong, and sometimes stronger, cohesion as more homogeneous ones, provided genuine effort is made to build connection across groups, something few residents notice until they actually need it most.
The apparent tension often arises not from diversity itself but from insufficient investment in the relationships and shared spaces that allow different groups to genuinely connect, which can leave a diverse community fragmented if that investment is genuinely missing, a nuance that is easy to miss without direct, lived experience of it.
Communities that actively invest in building connection across their diversity, rather than assuming cohesion will develop automatically or, alternatively, that diversity inherently prevents it, tend to demonstrate that the two qualities can reinforce rather than undermine each other over time, an effect that, though quiet, tends to be genuinely significant over time.
