Why timing matters when someone reaches out for help

The moment someone decides to reach out for help is often the result of building courage over an extended period, which makes a prompt, warm response particularly important once that moment finally arrives. A delayed or dismissive reaction at that critical moment can discourage the person from ever trying again.
Support services generally aim to make that first point of contact as easy and responsive as genuinely possible, recognising that the person reaching out may have been considering it for some considerable time before actually making contact with anyone at all, sometimes weeks or months.
For family and friends, being available and responsive when someone does reach out, even if the timing happens to be inconvenient, sends an important signal that their concern is taken seriously. That signal alone often does more to sustain a relationship than any specific advice offered in return, and it costs nothing to give consistently.
